I went to New Mexico for a lot of reasons, and one of them was to set aside intentional time for making art.
On the last day, while others were hiking, I sat in the library at Ghost Ranch, in Abiquiu, where Georgia O’Keefe lived and painted, making this collage – one of several mixed media pieces I created over the week. It was deeply satisfying.
Jung said that as soon as you focus your mind on an intention and open your mind to noticing the synchronicities – the meaningful coincidences that could never have been predicted – things start to happen.
I had been feeling drawn to collage lately, and almost the minute I arrived in Albuquerque, my friend Katy shared with me her collage materials, which are based on the book, SoulCollage. I loved it. I was both immediately hooked by the idea of creating an archetypal “deck of cards” representing the inner and outer energies of one’s life, and I also immediately began to adapt – adding watercolor and pen and ink to found images.
This morning, my first day back, I cleared the clutter of my art table and set it up the way I want to be, so that art making will finally be a part of my daily life. This felt even more sarisfying.
This project has been a long time coming. Why?
One reason is that I’m always waiting to get enough checked off the to do list to justify taking real time for art. The other is that I don’t trust that I’ll be able to create anything “good.” I always seems to think I have to study more before I have earned the right to just sit down and create for the joy of creating. I think I’m over that now.
So much of the struggle of our lives comes from not giving ourselves permission to do what would give voice to our inner life and replenish our souls. We need this inner replenishment to meet the challenges of life – both inner and outer. Whatever tensions, whatever problems are before us to be solved, we will experience with so much greater ease if we come to them renewed.
We simply have nothing to draw from if the well is empty. I think we know this more than we live it. I want to change that.
What refills your inner well? How often are you replenishing it?
Try focusing your mind on an intention and see what synchronicities The Universe will array to support you. All of us need you to bring your most conscious, strong, resilient and loving self to the world we live in – to bless us with your gifts.
I’m planning to pay ongoing attention to the fullness or emptiness of my inner well. I hope you’ll join me.
With You on the Path,
